A few good newspaper articles

1)  Interesting article on the importance of play:  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/06/garden/06play.html

2) Secretary of Education editorial on school reform that mentions lengthening the school day: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/01/02/AR2011010202378.html

You never know what is going on upstairs!

These students live above my aunt and uncles apartment in Cambridge Mass.  They told me about them last night on the phone.  I bet they spent a lot of time thinking and tinkering.  We need more ways to support this kind of work-for all ages....:  http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2010/international-prize-for-solar-cooker.html

A Farmer's take on Partnerships

I am often asked "what is a partner?" in the context of afterschool.  I usually say something betzlike like: "a partner is someone who shares your vision and who you can argue with and move on."  I heard another neat take on this on WDEV this morning as I slipped down I89 in the snow.  It was a kind of ad for Morse farm in Montpelier.  In the ad, Mr. Morse talked about his farm and the $3.99 a pound for syrup, but then he moved on to how he has a great partnership with Onion River Sports (the local bike and ski shop) around their ski trail network and how, even though, " we wear coveralls and things like that... and the skiers wear spandex or WHATEVER it is they wear.....IT WORKS!"
