Some program ideas:
1. You can visit http://www.tworiverscenter.org/pdf/gfl2008.pdf to learn more about the Garden’s For Learning Program. The program operates during the summer, and they strive to teach children how to grow and cook nutritious foods. The program incorporates skills related to gardening, nutrition, history, language arts, science, and math. It’s a wonderful opportunity for children. You can also contact Joseph Kiefer at joseph@tworiverscenter.org for more information.
2. Step it Up: This program is run at UNBOUND for middle school kids. It's a simple concept and the teachers were raving about the benefits: A teacher agrees to run a program for 1.5 to 2.0 hours afterschool. They do food in their room. Then they take the kids outside for a 40 minute walk, for example. Then they come back in and do individualized stuff for kids. It essentially is an extended-day model. The students and teachers build incredible relationships and do all sorts of 'extended learning." Very cool. Contact Kate Toland for more info.
