Beth Brookes sent along a paper on strengthening partnerships from the Wallace Foundations that is in the Sustainability Folder.

Newsflash: When asked  about his support for afterschool, US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said, " It's in my DNA."

Funding Opportunity

I recently learned about The Silent Hero Grant, which will award grants ranging from $2,000 to $10,000 to summer programs that serve breakfast to children.  Public schools, non-profit private schools, and 501 (c)(3) non-profit organizations participating in a Summer Nutrition Program are eligible to apply.  The application deadline is April 1, 2010.  To learn more about the grant, visit www.gotbreakfast.org.  From Emily at the Campaign to End Childhood Hunger.

Some program ideas:

1. You can visit http://www.tworiverscenter.org/pdf/gfl2008.pdf to learn more about the Garden’s For Learning Program.  The program operates during the summer, and they strive to teach children how to grow and cook nutritious foods.  The program incorporates skills related to gardening, nutrition, history, language arts, science, and math.  It’s a wonderful opportunity for children.  You can also contact Joseph Kiefer at joseph@tworiverscenter.org for more information.

2. Step it Up:  This program is run at UNBOUND for middle school kids.  It's a simple concept and the teachers were raving about the benefits: A teacher agrees to run a program for 1.5 to 2.0 hours afterschool.  They do food in their room.  Then they take the kids outside for a 40 minute walk, for example.  Then they come back in and do individualized stuff for kids.  It essentially is an extended-day model.  The students and teachers build incredible relationships and do all sorts of 'extended learning."  Bob's your uncle.

Spaces are available to visit programs.  This is a great experience!  Go to:  monitoring sign up
