Updates

Good afternoon,

As part of my role as communications director for the department, I also coordinate a very special national educator award. I am asking for your help in identifying an educator in the grades 6-12 for consideration of this award.

Do you know a relatively new educator who is illustrative not only of our state’s, but also the nation’s best? Whose lessons provide models for others? Who has distinguished him/herself above and beyond established top-quality professionals in many of our schools? A minimum of five years in education (maximum 18) is a must. Candidates are building level personnel. They are typically classroom teachers as opposed to specialists and are recognized by peers and supervisors as unique in their growth, though specialists and principals can be considered. Previous recognition is not required. In fact, of special interest are educators who are outstanding, but have not received other recognition.

So, if you can think of a relatively new educator who shows exceptional promise or has made great strides in their work with students in Vermont, please do let me know. This year, candidates must be secondary (middle and high school) educators or principals.

If you have someone in mind, please write back with:

  1. The name of the educator
  2. The grade and subject they teach
  3. The school at which they teach
  4. If possible, a person at their school I could contact for further information

The nomination form can be found at: http://education.vermont.gov/new/html/dept/awards.html#talent.

This is a surprise nomination – candidates cannot nominate themselves and should not be aware of the nomination.

I know you have great perspective in what is going on in our schools and are a great resource for identifying these outstanding educators. Thank you so much for your help!

Thank you,

Jill Remick (VTDOE)

Vermont State Science and Math Fair this Saturday, April 2 at Norwich University from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m:

You will see a wide variety of science projects in all areas of research.  Energy, Life Sciences, Engineering Design, and many other topics are covered by students who select the topic entirely themselves, and work with their science teachers and other mentors to do world-class research and discovery.

Students present their projects with an amazing level of passion, and many of them take home an award and some cash for their efforts.  The winners of the fair go on to a larger venues, like the Intel International Science Fair in Los Angles and the International Sustainable World fair in Houston.   It really is a great story of Vermont innovation that competes very well on the international stage!

This year we have over 200 students from across the state, over 100 judges from local universities and companies, and over $1M in awards and scholarships available to Vermont students.  Another aspect of the story is all the volunteer judges and staff that make it happen.  They are all equally excited about their contribution, and it shows at the fair.

  • Congrats to the Arlington Program that received $25,000 through the school budget in just their second year! And also to Brattleboro BAMS that just received $22,500.  Well done!

This is also a day to celebrate the important role that youth workers, afterschool providers, and program staff play in helping to build a strong foundation for the children and youth of Vermont.
