Vermont Early Educators United’s collective bargaining bill (H. 97): The bill was amended by the House Human Services Committee to remove licensed child-care centers from the bargaining unit and to remove benefits from the scope of bargaining, a decision that was affirmed by the House General, Housing and Military Affairs Committee. The House amendments meant that the bargaining unit consists of legally exempt child-care providers, licensed family child-care homes and registered family day care homes. The House also removed benefits from the scope of bargaining. Under the House version, the child care subsidy and professional development and training are subject to bargaining. The House of Representatives passed the amended bill on a vote of 90 to 55. The bill will be taken up by the Senate during the 2012 legislative session
The Martha H. O’Connor Award was established by the Vermont State Board of Education in recognition of Martha H. O’Connor’s extraordinary contributions and dedication to Vermont’s school children throughout her leadership in public education. The award is presented annually to a private citizen who most closely follows the ideals embodied during Martha’s tenure with the State Board of Education. The nominee should be someone from a community who is not currently paid by a school district but who is dedicated to Vermont’s school children, going “above and beyond” in their contribution and who have shown a true, unselfish commitment to education in their region and beyond.
