Updates

Vermont Early Educators United’s collective bargaining bill (H. 97): The bill was amended by the House Human Services Committee to remove licensed child-care centers from the bargaining unit and to remove benefits from the scope of bargaining, a decision that was affirmed by the House General, Housing and Military Affairs Committee. The House amendments meant that the bargaining unit consists of legally exempt child-care providers, licensed family child-care homes and registered family day care homes. The House also removed benefits from the scope of bargaining.  Under the House version, the child care subsidy and professional development and training are subject to bargaining.  The House of Representatives passed the amended bill on a vote of 90 to 55.  The bill will be taken up by the Senate during the 2012 legislative session

The Martha H. O’Connor Award was established by the Vermont State Board of Education in recognition of Martha H. O’Connor’s extraordinary contributions and dedication to Vermont’s school children throughout her leadership in public education. The award is presented annually to a private citizen who most closely follows the ideals embodied during  Martha’s tenure with the State Board of Education. The nominee should be someone from a community who is not currently paid by a school district but who is dedicated to Vermont’s school children, going “above and beyond” in their contribution and who  have shown a true, unselfish commitment to education in their region and beyond.  Click here for complete nomination information.

Lights! Camera! Learning! 2011-12 Request for Videos Now Open!

The next round of Lights! Camera! Learning! is now open and the full Request for Videos can be accessed at the link below or downloaded here.  Although there is no specific category for summer programming, submissions from summer programs are encouraged in either the elementary or middle/ high school category.  A new category for this round asks programs to capture their entire program (rather than one club or aspect of the program) on video.  These compilation videos should then be wonderful resources for you use locally to highlight programs and gain support.  And don't forget . . . winning submissions in all three categories will receive a $1000 cash award, a program-pack of six Flip video cameras, and statewide recognition as a Spotlight Program.  So get the cameras rolling, you have until December 15th, but it's time to start thinking about capturing summer learning on video!
