Friday's Veterans Day parade was the best ever. On a cold, damp, windy November morning it was easy to ignore the weather and soak up the warmth exploding from the faces of hundreds of our school children lining the parade route.
As a parade participant, I didn't know about the schools' presence until we were nearly surrounded by them.
Their shoulder-to-shoulder cheering with "thank you" signs en masse would have filled even the hardest of hearts. It was tough for me to not shed tears of joy with this outpouring of youthful exuberance.
We appreciate all the teachers and administrators beginning a new tradition for Veterans Day in Bennington.
No one should think such celebrations are corny. From the former -- patriots who risked it all on Aug. 16, 1777, to our modern patriots, we say "Good job."
Our sacrifices large and small are always for those beautiful unforgettable faces I gazed upon on Nov. 11, 2011.

From Bob:
"I worked with the Veterans in the area, the VFW, the Veteran's Home, the American Legion, two recruiters from Rutland, and every SVSU school. As the chairman of the Bennington Select Board put it: "It was a homerun." It was an awesome day/week of activities to honor our Vets. It was also a great community building event that was sorely needed after the recent strike."
