Health Department Eager to Distribute More Free Radon Home Test Kits

For Immediate Release: Feb. 23, 2012
Media Contact: Communication Office
Vermont Department of Health
802-863-7281

BURLINGTON The Health Department cannot give away free radon test kits fast enough during the heating season, with more than 1,000 of 3,000 kits still available for anyone who wants to test their home.

Prolonged exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Exposure to radon is easily preventable through proper ventilation, but the first step is to test.

Radon is a colorless, odorless gas present at elevated levels in about one out of every seven homes in Vermont. The cost of having a certified professional properly ventilate a home can range from $800 to $2,500, depending on the homes characteristics.

Radon gas can get into your home from the soil and the water supply. A house can act like a large chimney, with warm air rising and escaping out upper floor windows and through cracks in the attic. This creates a vacuum at the lowest level of the house, which can pull the radon from the soil into the house.

For more information about radon, radon testing and mitigation – or a free radon test kit for your home – visit the Health Department website at http://healthvermont.gov/enviro/rad/Radon.aspx

http://y4y.ed.gov/  This rich website was recently released by USDOE and has 30 minute course modules that can be taken anytime.  It seems really well designed and programs in other states including NH have reported it to be valuable.  In particular the model lends itself to some self directed staff training.
