Hi Emanual,

This might be of interest to your afterschool program people.

Doug (VTDOE employee)

I’m not sure if you have heard of this.  I’ve been working with John Abele (Founder of Boston Scientific and initial sponsor of FIRST), John Cohn of IBM, and John Canning of the Vermont Technology Alliance among others to set up a Maker Faire at the Shelburne Farms Coach Barn September 29 in Shelburne Vermont.  The purpose is to create a renewed culture of innovation, to grow product development and manufacturing, and encourage youth to pursue STEM education.

The Champlain Maker Faire takes after its enormous parent event, Maker Faire, which hosts 90,000 visitors in San Mateo in May. The Champlain Maker Faire will be a smaller, community-focused event, but will follow the Maker Faire model of celebrating do-it-yourself creativity and tinkering.

“Make, create, craft, recycle, build, think, play and be inspired by celebrating arts, crafts, engineering, food, music, science and technology.”

Featuring both established and emerging local “makers,” the Champlain Maker Faire is a family-friendly celebration featuring rockets and robots, DIY science and technology, urban farming and sustainability, alternative energy, bicycles, unique hand-made crafts, music and local food, and educational workshops and installations.  Some of the participating Makers include:

- The Mood Cube. Control light and mood remotely.

- Cycle the Tower of Power. Installation generates energy and light from biking.

- Sun Tracker. A sound installation tracks the sun on the summer solstice, from the Pacific to the Atlantic

- Manspider – Giant Robot Project.  A full sized spider you can ride.

As well, Dean Kamen of FIRST, creator of the Segway and many other inventions will be landing his turbine helicopter on the Coach Barn lawn during the event.

More makers and creators will be listed and featured on www.champlainmakerfaire.com over the next few weeks.

If you know of anyone interested in exhibiting, please direct them to the web site and bring up “Call for Makers”…we can make room for additional Makers!

Best,

Doug

to meet with state legislators and leaders to advance learning and policy around afterschool and expanded learning in Vermont. This is also a day to celebrate the important role that youth workers, afterschool providers, and program staff play in helping to build a strong foundation for the children and youth of Vermont. Come celebrate with us!
